ISO 9001 is an international standard that takes into account the activities of an organization, regardless of its sector. This norm focuses in customer satisfaction and their capability to provide products and services that comply with internal and external requirements of the organization. ISO 9001 is the most well-known norm and the most applied: More than a million organizations around the world are certified ISO 9001.

ISO 9001: 2015 is the most updated version and, in addition, the basis for the quality management system (QMS). This norm focuses in all the elements of quality management a company must have for an effective system that allows for the management and improvement of their products and services quality.

Customers tend to choose providers with this accreditation in order to assure that the company has a good QMS. This is one of the benefits of implementing said norm in an organization.

The newest version of the norm has 3 focuses:

  • The process-based focus seeks to establish, plan and develop processes and their interactions under the same line of organizational objectives. This focus integrates the PDCA cycle (Plan-Do-Check-Act) and risk-based thinking.
  • The risk-based thinking prevents accidents and takes advantage of the opportunities of positive aspects. It accepts that not all processes have the same impact in the capacity of organization and product delivery or satisfied services.
  • In the PDCA cycle, each project, mission, process and activity must be managed with this method, which gives the organization the assurance that all its processes count with properly managed resources and to determine opportunities for improvement and take actions accordingly.

Why implementing ISO norms in a company?

It is important to mention that ISO norms are entirely voluntary: Each company decides to undergo its implementation and evaluation of the requirements, as the norms establishes. The chief reason why an organization must become ISO certified is because it represents a warranty of growth and prestige. As it is logical, the bigger and the ore relevant the company, the higher the amount of ISO norm certifications.

The most implemented and/or certified norms are:

  • ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems
  • ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management Systems
  • ISO 45001:2018 Management Systems of Occupational Health and Safety

ISO norms in general, are increasing in importance due to the improvements that come with their implementation, as well as competitive advantages for companies of all sizes and sectors.

ISO 9001 norm is completely appicable to organizations in the technological sector.

In short, what are the benefits in IT?

The Quality Management System, presented by ISO 9001 establishes processes and manages quality in the use of information technologies, with the objective of reaching high customer satisfaction. When talking about IT, the documentation of tasks and hundreds of processes brings about very notorious benefits, such as: productivity, efficiency, knowledge  base (that implies the knowledge is in the organization, not just in the people), and quality in general service management.
